The most apropos recipe I could think of to go with the novel, American Dirt, was Dirt Cake. I used to make this all the time when my kids were little. When I served this to my 31 year-old-son yesterday, he said “This tastes like my childhood.”
With several layers of cookie crumbs and a filling made with cream cheese and pudding, Dirt Cake looks great in a trifle bowl. To make it more fun, I have a special flower pot and a spade that are only used for Dirt Cake. In the past, I used a bouquet of silk flowers inserted in the top for a special effect. But of course, the kids prefer gummy worms for the topping. This yummy dessert is a fun treat for young and old alike!
