The novel, Nothing To See Here, takes place in my home state of Tennessee. I can assure you that most Tennesseeans love a homestyle restaurant with a “Meat and Three” along with a dessert of either pie, cobbler or banana pudding. While I am more of a pie girl, I always associate banana pudding in the category of Classic Southern Desserts.
My mother used to make this Chessmen Banana Pudding long before Paula Deen made it famous and called it Not Yo’ Mama’s Banana Pudding. It uses Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies instead of traditional vanilla wafers and adds cream cheese. If you are in a hurry, it can be made with Cool-whip, but I prefer mine with homemade whipped cream.
